e-Fuses

Redundancy Diodes

Redundancy diodes (also known as OR-ing diodes) are electrical components that allow two or more power supply outputs to be safely connected in parallel. In redundancy mode, if any power supply fails, the RD module will prevent current flowing back into the failed unit, ensuring continuous uninterrupted operation. In current share mode, two power supplies can be connected in parallel to generate double the output current. The RD module will ensure that the output current is equally split between the two sources.

Redundancy diode modules are used in mission-critical applications to prevent costly downtime and to ensure fault or supply failure tolerance. Use examples include industrial automation, servers and data centers, telecommunications and packaging plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

An electronic fuse is an active protection device used to safeguard DC power systems from overcurrent and short-circuit faults. Unlike traditional melting fuses that rely on thermal destruction, an e-fuse uses high-speed electronic monitoring and a power MOSFET to disconnect the circuit instantly when a fault is detected.
An electronic circuit breaker provides significantly faster response times and higher precision. They eliminate "nuisance tripping" caused by temporary inrush currents and, unlike traditional fuses, do not require physical replacement after a fault. They also offer selective load protection, ensuring only the failing branch of a circuit is isolated.
Electronic fuses are widely used in industrial 24VDC systems, automation cabinets, control systems, and distributed power architectures with multiple connected loads. They are essential when a single high-current power supply supports multiple sensitive loads, such as PLCs, sensors, and actuators, where a fault in one component could jeopardize the entire system.
By providing intelligent 24VDC load protection, e-fuses prevent a single short circuit from pulling down the main power bus. This allows the rest of the industrial network to remain operational while a specific fault is isolated, minimizing downtime and simplifying troubleshooting.
A redundancy diode module allows current to flow in one direction only, so if two or more power sources are connected in parallel, current cannot flow from one power supply into the other or from the output back into any power supply. The diode function ensures that even if one power supply fails with an output short circuit, the healthy power supply can still take over and continue to supply the load.
Redundancy diode modules are available with power diodes, but the forward voltage drop across the diodes means that they dissipate a lot of heat at high currents. The RECOM RACPRO1-RD module uses active MOSFET decoupling to substantially reduce the power loss and heat dissipation. This is not just more efficient, delivering more available power to the load, but also reduces the ambient temperature inside the switching cabinet and increases its operational lifetime.
