Jeff: Welcome to RECOM's Powerful Podcast, where we discuss new topics and products. I'm Jeff Deutschman, your product moderator. On this episode, we'll be discussing our medical-grade DC/DC converters, the REMs. Peter, what can you tell us about these parts?


Peter: Well, Jeff, we offer a wide variety of medical-grade DC/DC converters, covering 1W all the way up to 30W.

Jeff: Very good. And these converters must come with medical safety standards, right?

Peter: That's correct. All of our REMs are certified to 60601-1. That is the medical standard for power supplies.

Jeff: What kind of specs are required to meet the 60601?

Peter: In general, medical-grade products require a high isolation and a low level of noise.

Jeff: What isolation voltage is typical for this?

Peter: Yeah, so for the REMs, the isolation spans anywhere from 5kV up to 10kV.

Jeff: Gotcha. And why is high isolation so important?

Peter: If you think about a medical application, there's always going to be a human involved. High isolation means that either the patient or operator are going to be protected if a fault occurs.

Jeff: Wow. So you're saying it is perfectly safe for these parts to be used in equipment directly in contact with a human.

Peter: Yep, they are. The REMs will meet either type BF or type CF environments for body or cardiac floating.

Jeff: Wonderful. So, these converters could be used in incubators, ultrasonic devices, or even defibrillators, right?

Peter: Yep, you got that right, Jeff. The medical-grade parts are all safe enough to be in these critical devices. This comes down to the MOPP rating. Our parts are 2MOPP, which stands for Means of Patient Protection.

Jeff: How do we meet the 2MOPP?

Peter: So, this goes back to the high isolation in addition to robust insulation. The internal transformers have reinforced insulation and also limit the amount of leakage current which can make its way to the patient.

Jeff: Excellent, Peter. What are some of our featured products?

Peter: Well, definitely the REM1. This is a 1W converter in a very compact SIP7 package. It's the smallest complete medical-grade power supply on the market.

Jeff: What about the mid-power range?

Peter: Yeah, so we also recently released low-cost 3.5, 5, and 6W converters. These are the REM3.5E, REM5E, and REM6E. In addition to all the medical features we just went over, these are offered with SMD or through-hole pinning.

Jeff: And all of the standard output voltages, I trust?

Peter: You got that right. In general, our parts have the 3.3V, 5, 9, 12, 15, or 24V options common in the industry. These REMEs also feature a 2:1 wide input voltage range.
