Jeff: Welcome to RECOM's Powerful Podcast, where we discuss new topics and products. I'm Jeff Deutschman, your product moderator. From a quarter watt up to 1,000 watts, whether the power is required for an industrial setting, a new IoT gadget, or a high-end medical-grade device, RECOM has you covered.
On this episode, we'll be discussing our new line of compact, surface-mount DC/DC converters. Peter, what more can you tell us about this new direction?

Peter: Well, Jeff, it has been a long-term goal of RECOM to offer a large selection of cutting-edge surface mount converters. We are referring to these new products as 3DPP.

Jeff: Sounds fancy. What does 3DPP stand for?

Peter: 3D Power Packaging. Basically, we're implementing new and advanced assembly techniques to minimize footprint and maximize performance.

Jeff: Excellent. So, what is the general idea of this new assembly process?

Peter: So, we eliminate the need for an internal PCB by mounting the components directly on a lead frame. This allows for a more compact form factor and helps with thermal management.

Jeff: Fantastic. So how small can these get?

Peter: Very small Jeff, so we just released a new switching regulator that is 3 x 5mm that is just 1.6mm tall. This is the RPX-1.0, it can output 1A and it's very power dense.

Jeff: Wow, so as small as an IC, but do customers need to worry about extra design work with these?

Peter: Uh, no, so there's very minimal design work for engineers here. Most of these converters will require a couple of external components, such as caps and resistors, but the lion's share of work is done before taking it off the shelf.

Jeff: Very nice. And what is the EMC performance like with these?

Peter: Yeah, so we take care of most of the filtering internally and even have an integrated inductor, which can be kind of tricky to spec in. Delete frame design also means tight switching current loops that inherently generate very low EMI.

Jeff: Okay, so I can see how these specs add up to make a very robust solution. Now are they offered with isolation?

Peter: Yes. So, we currently have the RxxCTxxS, which is a medically certified part with 5kVAC reinforced isolation. We have a more general version of this part being released soon.

Jeff: Very nice. And what about for non-isolated?

Peter: Yeah, so we also have many non-isolated options, such as the RPM and our RPX variations, and many new ones in the pipeline as well. So, these accept a variety of input voltages and provide tight regulation at a variety of power levels.

Jeff: Great variety. Is there an eval board available for these?

Peter: Yeah, glad you brought that up. So, we do build evaluation boards for most of the 3DPPs. This lets engineers quickly set up prototypes and validate the converters in their design. People can find more information by contacting us or visiting our website.

Jeff: Sounds like a great tool to showcase the size of performance of our newest DC/DCs. Peter, thank you so much. Well, that wraps it up for another episode of RECOM's Powerful Podcast. Be sure to listen next time when we delve into the pros of another RECOM topic. As always, please contact your regional sales manager for any samples or pricing.
