Jeff: Hi there, and welcome to RECOM's Powerful Podcast, where we discuss new topics and products. I'm Jeff Deutschman, your product moderator. From a quarter watt up to 1,000 watts, whether the power is required for an industrial setting, a new IoT gadget, or a high-end medical-grade device, RECOM has you covered.
On this episode, we will be discussing the new AC/DC power supply, the RAC05-K/PD3/H. Peter, what can you tell us about this one?

Peter: Hey Jeff, this is another great addition to our portfolio. The RAC05-K/PD3/H is one of our many 5W AC/DC options.

Jeff: We definitely have a variety there, don't we? What makes this one so unique?

Peter: Yeah, so this converter has a pollution degree 3 rating, hence the PD3 in the part suffix.

Jeff: All right, can you remind the folks at home what pollution degree means?

Peter: Yeah, of course. Pollution degree is a classification for the amount of dry pollution and condensation in an environment. So, for environments with more pollutants, a larger creepage and clearance is required.

Jeff: Okay, so is PD3 similar to IP ratings then?

Peter: Not exactly. IP is a rating of how the part is protected against the environment, such as dust and moisture, uh, whereas pollution degree defines what kind of environment the part is suitable for.

Jeff: Oh, got it. What would be considered a PD3 type environment?

Peter: Typically, I think of industrial environments which could be a construction or a farming site in those environments, the air isn't exactly pure. There could be more conductive pollutants coming in contact with the electronics.

Jeff: Okay. I can see that. So, a robust part to handle the messy environments. Does this new part have a certification for these qualifications?

Peter: Yeah, it sure does. So, our converter is IEC, EN and UL 61010 safety rated to PD3 and over voltage category three. And we also have a CB report that's in process.

Jeff: Excellent. Let's go into the converter specs. What kind of voltages are off?

Peter: Yeah, so this power supply has an input voltage range of 100V, up to 277VAC, and the high line tolerance is a little bit more than our other parts, it goes up to plus 15%, which means we cover 318VAC. And on the output side, we're currently offering 5, 12, and 15V.

Jeff: Very nice. And what can you tell us about the packaging?

Peter: Like many of our other parts, it's encapsulated and potted with polyurethane. The footprint is 53 x 27mm. So, it's a little bit larger than our other 5W options, but that's necessary for us to meet the PD3 creepage and clearance requirements.

Jeff: That absolutely makes sense. Lastly, are there any external filtering or other components required?

Peter: All the filtering is taken care of internally, so no need for the customers to worry about that. However, an external fuse is required in order to comply with the 61010 certifications, and more details about that can be found on our datasheet.

Jeff: Another great supply. Thank you, Peter. Well, that about wraps it up for this episode of RECOM's Powerful Podcast.
