Handling EV charger power levels in the kilowatts range requires safe, reliable, and secure charger system design. Depending on the EV charging application, solutions may vary.

In home charging applications, once an EV charger wall box has been installed, the EV OBC (onboard charger) handshakes with the EVSE to control power flow according to safety standards. The EV controls the EVSE charging rate, turning off the charger when the battery becomes full.

That said, an independent aux power supply is required to enable the main power stages when it's safe to do so. This requires power supplies that cope well with dips and surges, that conforms to OVC3, including: the RAC03E-K/277, a very small 37 x 24mm, low-cost 3W AC/DC; the RAC05-K/PD3/H, a 5W AC/DC that is certified for wet, dirty, and dusty environments; the RAC05-K/480, a 5W universal input AC/DC in a 2″x1″ package with 85VAC to 538VAC for line-line connections or L–N connection; or the RAC20-K/277, a 20W AC/DC in a 2″x1″package with extra power to drive displays or card readers.
